This Weird Green Ribbon Worm Looks Likes Something From Another Planet

For one fisherman in Penghu, Taiwan, the “catch of the day” wasn’t something he snagged with his rod, but a creature he caught on video.

Wei Cheng Jian captured footage of a long green worm-like animal with a pink protrusion that looks like another worm crawling out of it.

The creature is believed to be a ribbon worm, or nemertea, according to the Telegraph. The ribbon worm generally lives at sea but has been known to crawl onto land — possibly just to give people nightmares.

The pink worm-like appendage that appears to have a mind of its own is called a proboscis, which the worm uses to obtain food.

Smithsonian reports that when attacking prey, the ribbon worm will compress its body to push out the proboscis, “like the finger of a latex glove turned inside-out.”

The proboscis of some types of ribbon worms are sticky, while some have suckers for grasping prey and others have a spike for stabbing, Smithsonian said.

UPI reports that ribbon worms average 7.9 inches long. While there is no size given for the one in the video, the fishing pole next to it suggests it’s roughly two to three feet long.

Some types of ribbon worms are much longer. According to Guinness World Records, a species of ribbon worm known as the bootlace worm (Lineus longissimus) is the longest of all worms. A specimen that washed ashore in the U.K. in 1864 was measured at 180 feet in length.

Minnie Mouse And Hello Kitty Headed To The Slammer For Fighting In Times Square Brawl

Winnie ArrestedThere are ample ways to scar your children for life while on a visit to New York City — but seeing their most beloved cartoon characters fight, and then take their heads off, might take the cake.

The war between costumed characters and tourists in Times Square raged on this week, as Minnie Mouse and Hello Kitty were arrested on Thursday for fighting each other. The New York Daily News identified them as Sandra Mocha, 34, of Queens, and Giovanna Melendez, 40, of New Jersey, and reported that the spat was over tips.

Twitter user Jake Rullman snapped photos of Minnie — without her mousy mask on — getting cuffed:

The pair were charged with assault, and as Gothamist points out, probably ensured “a thickening of child therapists’ wallets nationwide.”

If you weren’t already aware, most of the costumed characters in Manhattan aren’t sanctioned by the city, or by any business. They’re just regular folk trying to make a buck. According to The New York Times, they’ve been fighting with the city for years for the right to accept — and, in some cases, demand — tips for photos. The New York City Council has also been pushing to get characters fingerprinted, as well as to have them pay up to $170 for a two-year license in order to accept tips.

Meanwhile, there’s a constant civil war going on between many of the characters, as they battle for territory and tourists’ wallets. In 2013, a New York Post reporter tried to join their ranks as an undercover Winnie the Pooh, and the response wasn’t exactly friendly.

“A dangerous character could be hiding in a cuddly character,” New York Council member Peter Vallone said in 2013, after a costumed Elmo was jailed for allegedly trying to extort $2 million from the Girl Scouts of the USA.

In one of the most famous cases of bad character in Times Square, a man dressed as Spider-Man punched a police officer.

That said, most of the characters are honest people whose daily interactions with tourists are civil. Yahoo News introduced a number of the people behind the masks in a video late last year.

“Most of us are just trying to make a living,” said Edwin Garcia, an Elmo who supports a wife and 7-month-old daughter in New Jersey.

Broncos Fine Players for Farting During Team Meetings

von miller

Von Miller has broken the rules a number of times, but his latest infraction really stinks. The Denver Broncos linebacker is back at organized team activities after an All-Pro season in 2014. After a recent session, though, Miller let it slip to the Denver Post’s Nicki Jhabvala that a certain habit has taken some significant air out of his wallet.

von miller1

Yes, the Broncos have a Fart Tax, and Miller is a frequent offender. When asked to expand, however, the 26-year-old didn’t hold his feelings in.

von miller2

We feel for Miller a bit here, as it’s clear his farts don’t have nefarious intentions. Still, it’s hard to blame the Broncos for policing the issue in an effort to keep the gas leaks to a minimum.

Is Your Toothbrush Is Covered In Your Roommate’s Poop

No matter what you do to clean your toothbrush chances are that it’s still covered on poop. There’s poop on your toothbrush, and your cleaning your teeth with that poop. Do you have a roommate and/or share a bathroom with anyone? There’s an 80% chance their poop is on your toothbrush. A recent study at Quinnipiac University found that over half the tootbrushes in the world (or at least the ones they tested) have poop on them (54.85% of all toothbrushes tested were found to have fecal bacteria), and when a person shares a bathroom there was an 80% chance that the fecal coliform bacteria (poop stuff) is from the poop of a roommate. I feel the need to stress this point with you, bros: there’s poop on your toothbrush, and that poop on your toothbrush is probably your roommate’s poop.

No matter what you do (hot water, cold water, sterilizing it in mouthwash) your toothbrush likely has poop on it. Also, where you keep the toothbrush in your home has only a minimal effect on whether or not your poop or the poop of your roommate ends up on those bristles rubbing against your gums.

The DailyMail reports:

According to a new study, there is a 60 per cent chance your toothbrush is covered in poo, regardless of how well you clean it.
And that’s not all. If you share a bathroom, around 80 per cent of that faeces will belong to another person.
The research looked at the spread of something known as fecal coliforms in communal bathrooms at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut.
Fecal coliforms are rod-shaped bacteria found in human faeces and can spread onto a toothbrush through the air through actions such as flushing the toilet.
‘The main concern is not with the presence of your own fecal matter on your toothbrush,’ said Lauren Aber, a student involved in the study at Quinnipiac University.
‘[It’s] when a toothbrush is contaminated with fecal matter from someone else, which contains bacteria, viruses or parasites that are not part of your normal flora.
All toothbrushes in the study were collected from participants using communal bathrooms, with an average of 9.4 occupants per bathroom.
Regardless of the storage method, at least 60 per cent of the toothbrushes were contaminated with faeces.
There were no differences seen with the effectiveness of the decontamination methods between cold water, hot water or rinsing with mouthwash.
And all of the toothbrushes regularly rinsed with mouthwash had growth indicating fecal contamination.
Fecal coliforms were seen on 54.85 per cent of toothbrushes, which has been seen in previous studies.
There is an 80 per cent chance that the fecal coliforms seen on the toothbrushes came from another person using the same bathroom.
‘Using a toothbrush cover doesn’t protect a toothbrush from bacterial growth, but actually creates an environment where bacteria are better suited to grow by keeping the bristles moist and not allowing the head of the toothbrush to dry out between uses,’ said Aber.

So the poop bacteria flies into the air when you flush and lands on your toothbrush. Solution: NEVER FLUSH. That, or get an extremely low-flow toilet. But the better solution is to obviously NEVER FLUSH YOUR TOILET AGAIN.

If there’s no flushing then there’s no poop bacteria flying in the air to land on your toothbrush, and there’s no poop in your mouth (which there is right now).
